Nursing students enjoy tranquility offered by recently dedicated patio

The School of Nursing renames its patio after Aiken residents Jerry and Lynn Bishop in honor of their generous donation to the nursing program

In celebration of Nurse Appreciation Week, nursing students at the University of South Carolina Aiken can unwind on the freshly dedicated patio, named in recognition of two generous benefactors.

The School of Nursing held a dedication ceremony for Aiken residents Jerry and Lynn Bishop to thank them for their thoughtful gifts. As the parents of two daughters in the nursing profession, the Bishops said they want to support the nursing program in any way possible.

The Jerry & Lynn Bishop Patio has both covered and uncovered areas. Recent nursing graduate Courtney Young says the patio is an excellent place for students to sit back and decompress.

Instead of learning in a classroom, students decided to move their studies outside on the Jerry & Lynn Bishop Patio
Reflecting on her conversation with the Bishops, Dr. Katie Chargualaf, Interim Dean of the School of Nursing, discussed her desire to refresh the outdoor space for students. “When the Bishops donated to the School of Nursing, they asked that some of the funds go towards updating the patio for student use,” Chargualaf said. We wanted to recognize their gift and impact somehow and thought naming the patio would achieve that.”

The Bishops funds will also support students and improve retention, especially for the Peer Ambassador for Student Success (PASS) Program. Students selected as Peer Ambassadors receive a scholarship in exchange for serving as tutors and mentors to lower-level students taking challenging BSN program courses.

Funds were also provided for the department’s high-fidelity simulation lab, including the CODE II pediatric mannequin, two pediatric IV arms, a smart IV pump with extra channels, a geriatric mask, and a bassinet. Finally, the Bishops’ gift will fund numerous student scholarships.
