Four seniors from the University of South Carolina Aiken’s Teaching Fellows organization showed up to ask important questions of South Carolina legislators during Hill Day in Columbia, S.C.

The event allows students to directly participate in the decision-making process impacting K-12 education in the state. “Hill Day not only allows our Fellows an opportunity to personally thank their local representatives, but it also affords them a chance to advocate for their profession,” said Dr. Tim Lintner, faculty advisor to the Teaching Fellows and professor of education at USCA.

During their visit, four senior Fellows met with Sen. Tom Young, who asked the Fellows what he could do to continue supporting public education in the state. The Fellows advocated for increased teacher salaries, additional resources to address student mental health issues, support for multi-lingual learners, and thanked Young for his support of USCA’s program.

Each spring, USCA sends senior Teaching Fellows to Hill Day to continue the engagement and advocacy their predecessors established over a decade ago.
