Graduating senior discovers passion for service in quest for a career

Adriaonna Hill is one of five graduating seniors university-wide selected as exceptional students ahead of December Commencement

Graduating senior Adriaonna Hill said she's ready for December Commencement, a time when she will join fellow USC Aiken graduates in receiving their university diplomas and officially welcomed as alumni of the university.

Hailing from Batesburg-Leesville, Hill is a sociology major in the School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. "USC Aiken was so affordable," she said. Hill said the competitive price along with the university's proximity to her home were the main reasons she chose USC Aiken.

Hill said when she first enrolled at USC Aiken, she selected early childhood education as her major before changing to sociology in her junior year. "When I got into it, I really liked it," she said. "My goal is to work in human services or help kids." Right now, she's working with Career Services on campus to identify future employment opportunities in the field.

Hill is also involved in extracurricular activities on campus such as NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), Pacesetters, PEAK (Pacers Engaged and Attaining Knowledge), and currently serves as the president of C.U.R.L.S (Confident Unique Regal Leading Society).

"I actually got involved with C.U.R.L.S during my sophomore year with my friend," Hill recalled. "We got thrown on the executive board. I started off as a secretary and then just built my way up from there." Hill said she's had some of the best experiences helping to mentor underclassmen while serving as a Pacesetter and a member of PEAK.

Her advice for incoming students is to ask for help as early as possible. ''Make connections with professors and even student life on campus because they can really help you to succeed," she said.

USC Aiken will hold its December Commencement at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, in the university's Convocation Center.
