Center for Lifelong Learning opens registration for fall courses

The Center for Lifelong Learning (CLL) has officially opened registration for fall semester classes on the campus of the University of South Carolina Aiken.

The organization's mission is to provide both structured and informal education opportunities for adults in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) in conjunction with USC Aiken. Opportunities include in-person lecture classes, field trips, and social events for all age groups but primarily senior citizens. "This is unique to this area," said Raleigh Daniel, CLL president. "People from Augusta and North Augusta would drive over here to take these courses."

Seventy-three courses will be taught this fall semester in a variety of subjects from technology, the arts, astronomy, literature, and more. There are no grades or tests required, but attendance is expected.

"Our only requirement here is that if you sign up for a class, we want you to show up," said Bob Hood, an instructor in the center. Hood will teach three different classes this semester with one of them focusing on how to use iCloud with your iPad/iPhone. "There are a number of courses that concentrate on things here in Aiken such as local cemeteries, celebrities, and places many may not know about," he said.

USC Aiken Chancellor Dan Heimmermann will even teach a course focusing on the impact of the French Revolution on America and the world. That course will be taught on Friday, Oct. 6, in the Penland Administration Building from 9:30–10:30 a.m. The cost is $5.

In an open house held on campus on Aug. 15, approximately 250 people registered for fall classes. "This is very important to have," said Debbie Brooks, secretary and coordinator for the CLL. "Most of the seniors don't have a computer so we can help them with that."

To take courses or participate in events, a $35 membership fee is required. The fee helps to pay for the use of classrooms and administrative help.

The CLL is always looking for volunteers to serve as liaisons and instructors. Those interested should contact Raleigh Daniel at (803) 641-3731.

Registration is open until the course begins, and most courses cost between $5-$20.

Two courses have been canceled for this semester they are The Life, Times, and Influence of Henry David Thoreau and The Life, Art, and Stories of Dr. Seuss.
