USC Aiken invites the community to watch the annual partial solar eclipse

USC Aiken women's basketball team instills hope in S.C. students

The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team is helping to inspire rural students in S.C. The team partnered with the Edgefield County Youth Empowerment Center to host "Books and Basketball" on Tuesday, Oct. 3.

USC Aiken sees high enrollment since Covid-19

The University of South Carolina Aiken welcomed nearly 4,000 students for the fall semester on Thursday, Aug. 23. 

It's the highest enrollment the university has seen since Covid-19.

USC Aiken welcomes new freshman class, including Pacer LIFE students

The University of South Carolina Aiken just welcomed its largest freshman class in history.

Some of the students talked about what they're looking forward to the most this year. Pacer LIFE (Learning Is For Everyone) is a new two-year program on campus that focuses on students with intellectual disabilities.

USC Aiken launches new texting program to keep donors informed

The University of South Carolina Aiken has a new texting program to facilitate better connections with the university and community. 

Those enrolled will receive one text per month with information regarding key campus events, university developments, social media updates, and information on how donor funds are being invested.

USC Aiken Chancellor Named One of Education’s Most Inspiring Thought Leaders

University of South Carolina Aiken Chancellor Daniel Heimmermann has been named as one of the Most Inspiring Thought Leaders Transforming Education in 2023 by Insights Success magazine.

Heimmermann became the fifth chancellor of USC Aiken in July 2021. Prior to that, he served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Texas Permian Basin, where he ranked as the most senior chief academic officer in the University of Texas System. He also held administrative and academic roles at the University of Texas Brownsville (now the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) and the University of North Alabama.

USC Aiken students react to SCOTUS decision to reject Biden's student loan relief plan

The Supreme Court ruled to strike down President Joe Biden's plan to forgive $400 billion in student loan debt. 

According to the Associated Press, the 6-3 decision, said that the Biden administration overstepped its authority with the plan.

USC Aiken partners with Clemson University for the Call Me MISTER program

USC Aiken is partnering with Clemson University with the Call Me MISTER program, which is helping to create teaching opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds. The program gives scholarships to young men from underserved communities. 

USC Aiken's Call Me MISTER coordinator, Rashad Paige leads the program and says it's had a good impact on his life. 

Participants receive training, mentorship through their education, and in return teach in public schools for the number of years they received the scholarship.

USC Aiken professor discusses South Carolina’s efforts to make Juneteenth a paid holiday

Dr. Sarah Young, assistant professor in the Department of History, Political Science and Philosophy at the University of South Carolina Aiken, provided insight to the Aiken Standard on efforts in South Carolina to make Juneteenth -- a federal holiday that commemorates the effective end of slavery in the U.S. – a paid holiday.

"Recognition of official holidays really (does) matter in the sense that they influence the collective memory," she said. "It's a great opportunity for the citizens as a whole to become educated about the conditions of the past but not just of the past, but how these conditions have changed and how they relate to the current status quo."
